Recent News: Via Crucis Murals Beginning in 2012 the Good Friday live performance of the "Via Crucis" (Latin for Stations of the Cross) will take place inside of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. Four large backdrop murals (8 x 12 feet) were needed to display the various scenes of Jesus' journey. Kathy Rennell Forbes and Cathy Ehrler, parishioners of Sacred Heart, donated their time to create the scenes in collaboration with Deacon Marino Gonzalez and Father Mario Lopez. Both artists assist the deacon with the Front Door Ministries every week and when he learned they were artists, he asked if they painted murals and the talks soon began with Father Mario Lopez. Once the idea had been set, the two artists prepared preliminary sketches that were approved. Scene 1 is the Garden of Gethsemane at sunset in a lush olive grove with rocky terrain. The next is the Courtyard scene with the high drama of the pillars and shadows. Scene 3 shows the rocky, barren "Road to Golgotha" and finally scene 4 is on "Top of Golgotha" with a dark, stormy sky. Each scene becomes more somber as it approaches the hour of Jesus' death. Deacon Marino said, "The scenes are just so beautiful and realistic, they will truly enhance the drama of the performance". "I value Kathy's talent and hard work and we make a great team on a project this size," Ehrler says. Forbes added "We've worked as a team many times but this is the first collaboration on an actual painting." These large works required a lot of space and thanks to the high ceilings and large walls in Studio Z the project found a home. "We were up and down ladders for several weeks, we definitely got our exercise!" said Cathy. |
